There are several different kinds of boxing. All will give you a tough workout, improving your agility, speed, and coordination.
If you want to learn to fight, it can be tricky to find classes geared towards that kind of training rather than a boxing-themed workout. This is particularly true if you're searching for women-only classes. But they are out there (see links below for Chicago options).
Initial costs are primarily the lessons or gym membership. It is also possible to set up a home gym and learn using youtube or other online tutorials. Note that if you are in Chicago the Park District offers very affordable classes.
